Trail Maintenance

TRAIL WORK:  Mesa Verde Back Country Horsemen members and volunteers perform trail work to help maintain some of the trails in the San Juan National Forest and on BLM lands.  Due to governmental budget cuts, we try to do our part to keep trails in good condition for all users. We believe this will help in keeping these precious trails open for recreational use by horsemen in the future. We often work with other groups like the San Juan Mountain Association in preserving the back country.

TARGET TREE CORRAL PROJECT:  Mesa Verde Back Country Horsemen members are in the process of planning for the addition of some access trails and horse corrals at some of the campsites at Target tree Campground off Highway 160 west of Mancos.   Watch for activities and volunteer opportunities on this project.

REPORTING PROBLEMS:  Please report trees down across the trails, other trail blockages, broken signage, and major erosion to the MVBCH Chapter President.   We'll try to get it taken care of and/or report situations to Forest Service officials.  While our emphasis is on our adopted trails, Mavreeso, Goble, and Fish Creek, we'll help out on any trails that need work.

FISH CREEK:   This is our newly adopted trail, and we had a coordinated work day with the Forest Service on August 15, 2009. A friend of MVBCH, a fellow trail user and hiker, helped us by GPS mapping the entire trail before our work day. Nine MVBCH members partnered to cut out 12 downed trees, repair water bars and improve drainage. Some of us hauled out trash, including an old stove and about 130 pounds total of scrap fabric. We plan to continue much needed work on this trail, connecting the lower and upper sections. After our day of hard work, we all enjoyed the camaraderie of a BBQ and many laughs.

We packed in some tools via horseback and on foot and installed a damaged confidence marker/trail head sign. We repaired a very boggy section of trail that has a natural spring running through it as well as repaired some trail erosion. We also cut out several more trees that had fallen across the trail.

Late in 2007 and again in 2008, we worked with the US Forest Service in recovering an old trail. Now the Mavreeso-Goble Connector Trail is open and it is possible to ride from the Goble trail head to the Mavreeso trail head.

Earlier in 2007, MVBCH donated over 13 tons of road base gravel to improve the entrance to the Mavreeso Trail Head parking area.  Members manned shovels and rakes to move the huge piles around, filling big holes and eroded areas. It is now possible to get horse trailers in and out safely.  A big Thanks to Curly of Summit Sand & Gravel for hauling the gravel!
